"From a Colin McCahon to a first edition Charizard"
The full spectrum of expertise

No Middlemen

In-house expertise for valuations and sales. Traditional auction houses take 15-25% in seller's premiums and buyer's fees. We connect you directly to buyers, meaning higher net returns, faster results, and full transparency at every step.

Complete Discretion

Full confidentiality for private collections, estates, and high-value items. Every engagement handled with the utmost professionalism.

Art to Trading Cards

Whether it's a Colin McCahon or a first edition Charizard, we bring the same care, research, and expertise to every item.

Nationwide, On-Site

We travel anywhere in Aotearoa with our own professional equipment. Hands-on, in-person attention — your items never leave your sight and never leave your home.

Luke Heather, Founder and Director of Heather & Co.

Luke Heather

Founder & Director, Heather & Co.

I've been collecting since I was eight years old. What started with drawing and scribbling in the covers of my textbooks and trading cards in the school playground turned into a lifelong obsession with art, history, and the stories behind the things people keep.

Over the years, I've built personal collections spanning multiple things from trading cards, fine art, antiques, and curiosities of every kind. I know the thrill of finding something rare in a forgotten box, and I know the heartbreak of finding out something isn't what you hoped.

That's why I started Heather & Co. Too many people are sitting on collections they don't fully understand, paying auction houses 20% or more to sell items they've never had properly valued. I wanted to offer something different: genuine expertise, honest valuations, and a direct path to market that puts more money in your pocket.

Whether you've inherited a house full of art, rediscovered your childhood card collection, or you're a serious collector looking for discreet, expert support, I'd love to have a conversation.

Training & Credentials
  • Sotheby's Institute of Art

    Enrolled · commences November 2026

Formal training in art history, connoisseurship and the mechanics of the international art market — the same grounding the major auction houses require of their own specialists.

  • International Society of Appraisers

Candidate · Core Course in progress

Candidacy confirmed and supported by four professional references. The ISA Core Course in Appraisal Studies covers USPAP-aligned methodology, report writing and ethics — the standards insurers, solicitors and executors expect a valuation to be built on.

  • Collecting & buying at auction

Art since 2016 · cards since the 1990s

I have been buying at auction and building my own art collection since 2016 — which means I have sat on the other side of the paddle, paid the premiums, and learned what a catalogue entry does and doesn't tell you. With trading cards the history runs longer: I was the right age when Pokémon first arrived in the late nineties, and I have followed that market through every cycle since — the original boom, the long quiet years, and the resurgence.

  • Not-for-profit & community work

    Ongoing · references on request

Ongoing volunteer work with a number of New Zealand not-for-profit organisations. At their request they are not named publicly, but details and contacts can be supplied on request.

I list my training exactly as it stands, including what is still in progress. You are entitled to know precisely who is valuing your collection — and anyone who won't tell you that plainly is worth a second thought.

Answers before you ask

The questions we get most from collectors, executors and families across New Zealand. If yours isn't here, just ask — the first conversation is always free.

How much does an art valuation cost in New Zealand?
The first conversation is always free. After we understand the size and type of your collection we quote a fixed fee before any work begins, so you always know the cost up front. Fees depend on the number of items, the depth of research required, and whether the valuation is for insurance, estate or market purposes. We never charge a percentage of your collection's value.
What's the difference between a valuation and an appraisal?
In practice the terms are used interchangeably in New Zealand. What actually matters is the basis of value. An insurance valuation reflects replacement cost; an estate or probate valuation reflects fair market value at date of death; a market valuation reflects what a piece would realistically achieve if sold today. We state the basis of value clearly in every report.
Do you buy trading cards directly, or only broker them?
Both. We buy Pokémon, Magic: The Gathering, Yu-Gi-Oh! and sports card collections directly at fair market price — cash in hand, no auction fees, no waiting for a sale to settle. If your collection would achieve more through a managed sale, we'll tell you and broker it instead. More on trading cards →
How is this different from using an auction house?
Auction houses typically charge a seller's premium of 15–25%, plus photography, cataloguing and insurance fees — and you wait for the next suitable sale. We work directly with you and connect your pieces straight to the market, so more of the sale price stays with you. We're the specialist doing the work, not a referral service passing you on.
Do you travel outside Auckland?
Yes. We provide on-site cataloguing and valuation nationwide, including Wellington, Christchurch, Hamilton, Tauranga and Dunedin. For collections outside Auckland we can often assess initial photographs remotely before arranging a visit.
I inherited a collection and have no idea what any of it is. Can you help?
That's one of the most common reasons people contact us. We identify, research and document everything, then give you a clear picture of what's valuable, what isn't, and what your options are. You're under no obligation to sell anything. More on estate & probate →
Are your valuations accepted for insurance and probate?
Yes. Our reports are prepared with the documentation insurers, solicitors and executors require — photographs, condition notes, provenance where available, the basis of value used, and the date of valuation. More on valuations →
Is my collection kept confidential?
Completely. We never disclose client names, collection contents or valuations to anyone. Discretion is standard on every engagement, and we're happy to sign a confidentiality agreement if you'd prefer it in writing.

Still unsure where to start? Send us a message — no obligation, no sales pitch.

Ready to unlock your collection's potential?

Whether you have a single piece you're curious about or an entire collection that needs attention, we'd love to hear from you. The first conversation is always free.
