Heather & Co. Auctions

Auctions for the things collectors actually collect

Timed online sales run from Auckland and open to bidders anywhere in the world: premium trading cards, modern and contemporary art, sculpture, vinyl, consoles and the collectibles that general auction houses do not understand. Every lot is researched and catalogued to the standard in our sample catalogue, and every fee is printed before you bid or consign.

In preparation: consignments open, sale dates to be announced

New Zealand has good auction houses for the domestic art canon and a marketplace for everything else. Very few treat a 1st Edition Charizard, a first pressing, a sealed console or a mid-career sculptor with the same research, photography and honesty a painting gets. That is the gap this is built for.

The first three sales

Each sale is a timed online auction closing lot by lot on a set evening, New Zealand time, with an in-person preview in Auckland the week before. Dates are announced to the updates list first.

How bidding works

Timed online auctions, so nobody has to be in a room at the right moment. You set the most you are willing to pay and the system bids for you, one increment at a time, only as far as it needs to.

Register

Bidder registration opens with the first sale: name, email and a card on file for verification. It is free and takes two minutes. Until then, join the updates list below to hear the date first.

Preview

Every lot has full photography, a condition statement and a research entry online. Sales with art and sculpture also have an in-person preview in Auckland the week before.

Set your maximum

Enter the most you would pay. Your bid only rises when someone else bids against you, and never past your limit.

Extended bidding

Any bid in the final fifteen minutes adds fifteen minutes to that lot. Nobody wins by clicking in the last second. The lot closes when the bidding actually stops.

Pay and collect

Invoice on the night, payment by card or bank transfer, then collection in Auckland or insured, tracked shipping worldwide.

Watch the clock reset

This is the rule that protects you from last-second sniping. Place a bid on the example lot while the clock is inside its final window and the close moves back. The lot only ends when fifteen real minutes pass without a bid.

The demo runs at thirty times speed: fifteen minutes is shown as thirty seconds. The figures are illustrative.

Consigning with us

You deal with one person from the first photo to the final payment. No department, and no surprise line on the statement.

Send photos

Use the form below, WhatsApp or email. Front, back, any marks or labels, and a shot of the whole collection if there is one. Do not sort or clean anything first.

Honest first read

Within one working day we tell you whether it belongs in a sale, roughly where it might land, and if it would do better sold privately or not at all. No charge.

Terms in writing

Reserve, estimate, commission and which sale, all on one page you sign before anything is photographed or listed.

We do the work

Research, photography, condition report and catalogue entry, grading submission where it pays, and the preview. Your item is stored securely in our care, and insurance for the sale period is agreed with you in writing as part of the terms.

Paid when it clears

A statement showing the hammer price, the agreed commission and your net, paid by bank transfer once the buyer's funds have cleared. If a lot does not sell, we tell you what to do next.

Fees, in the open

The buyer's premium and the seller's commission schedule will be published on this page before the first sale. There is no photography fee, no cataloguing fee, no insurance surcharge and no unsold-lot charge. Where a lot needs grading or shipping, that cost is agreed with you in writing before it is incurred. If a cost is not on this page or in your signed terms, you do not pay it.

Reserves and estimates

Every reserve is agreed with you in writing and never raised without your say-so. Estimates are built from comparable sales, the same way our valuations are, and we will show you the evidence behind them. We will also tell you when we think a private sale or a direct purchase would serve you better than an auction.

What is different about this one

The catalogue is the product

A trading card or a record gets the same research entry as a painting: identification, condition, provenance and comparable sales. You can see the standard now in the sample catalogue.

Fees you can read

Two published numbers and nothing else. Auction houses that add photography, insurance and admin lines to the settlement are charging for the parts of the job that are the job.

Built for what ships

Cards, records, consoles and small collectibles sell to the whole world from Auckland. Art and sculpture sell to Australasia with a real preview. The sale format follows the object, not the other way round.

One name on every lot

Luke Heather catalogues, photographs and answers for every lot personally. Read about the training behind that, exactly as it stands, on the homepage.

Registration under the Auctioneers Act 2013, published conditions of sale and our anti-money-laundering procedures will all be in place and linked from this page before the first lot is offered. Until then, nothing here is an offer to sell.

Need to sell before then?

Private sale and brokerage

We already sell art and collectibles directly to buyers we know, on a commission agreed in writing, with no auction house in the middle. If timing matters, this is the faster route. How selling works →

Direct purchase of cards

For trading card collections we can make an offer ourselves, itemised per card so you can compare it with anyone else's. We say plainly when we are wearing a buyer's hat. Trading cards in depth →

Questions before the first sale

When is the first auction?
The first sale will be premium trading cards, and the date is announced to the updates list and consignors first. Sign up below and you will hear before it is public. We would rather open with a strong, well-catalogued sale than an early thin one.
Can I bid from outside New Zealand?
Yes. Bidding is online and open worldwide. Cards, records, consoles and small collectibles ship internationally with tracking and insurance, and the shipping estimate is shown on the lot before you bid. Larger art and sculpture is normally collected in Auckland or shipped within New Zealand and Australia; ask before the sale and we will quote it.
What does it cost to sell?
A seller's commission agreed in writing before your lot is listed, and nothing else. The commission schedule will be published on this page before the first sale. There is no photography, cataloguing, insurance or unsold-lot fee.
What does it cost to buy?
The hammer price plus a buyer's premium, which will be published here before the first sale, plus shipping if you are not collecting. The premium is shown on every lot page and on your invoice; there is nothing added afterwards.
How do you stop shill bidding?
We do not bid on our own lots, and neither do consignors: the conditions of sale prohibit it, every bidder is identity-verified, and bid histories are visible on each lot. Reserves are set in writing before the sale and cannot be raised during it. If we ever have a financial interest in a lot beyond the commission, the catalogue will say so.
How are cards and collectibles authenticated?
Graded cards are verified against the grader's certification database. Raw cards are examined for trimming, resealing and counterfeits before they are accepted. Sealed product is weighed and the seals inspected. Memorabilia is only accepted with provenance or third-party authentication, and the catalogue entry says which.
What happens if my lot does not sell?
Nothing is charged. We tell you why we think it passed, whether a lower reserve, a different sale or a private sale makes more sense, and you decide. Unsold lots go back to you or into the next suitable sale at your choice.
Is this a licensed auction house?
Whether registration under the Auctioneers Act 2013 is required depends on the format of the sale, and we are taking advice on the timed online model before the first lot is offered. Any registration that applies, along with published conditions of sale and anti-money-laundering procedures, will be in place and linked from this page before then. Until then this page is an invitation to register interest and consign, not an offer to sell.
